RICK KOLOWSKI BULLIES ON NRD BOARD

There is much national attention focused now on bullies in our public schools.  Many school districts are implementing policies voluntarily or because of state mandate to stem the tide of students bullying other students.  But what about bullies who used to run the schools?  Case in point: Rick Kolowski, former principal at Millard West High School in Omaha, NE.  As chairman of the Papio-Mo. River Natural Resources District board, he runs the meetings like a dictator wielding an iron fist.  As one typical example, at the October monthly board meeting, he shouted and shut down a fellow board member and called him out of order, when that board member sought to question the expenditure of tax dollars on an unneeded dam that would confiscate productive farm land, as the affected landowners politely sat in the audience.  On a later agenda item, he “conveniently” forgot to ask for public comment on his willingness to splurge additional tax dollars unnecessarily to enhance a proposed UNMC Cancer Center with rain gardens, pools, and playgrounds.  We protested his oversight, and fellow board members embarrassingly informed him of his error, which we believe was intentional.  His attempt to bully us during our testimony that evening was transparent.  Someone of this temperament, who taxes and spends like a wild liberal, is not a fit candidate for our state legislature and should not win election this November.

STOP BELLEVUE, NE. SALES TAX HIKE

The Bellevue City Council has voted 5-0 to place a question on the Nov. 6 ballot, asking voters to approve an additional 1/2c local sales tax, increasing the local sales tax to 2c per dollar.  Including the 5.5c per dollar state sales tax, Bellevue residents would pay a total of 7c per dollar sales tax.  Supposedly, this additional sales tax would pay for improved infrastructure to entice businesses to locate in Bellevue.  However, our NTF examination of LB 357, passed by the Legislature earlier this year, reveals that cities could use this additional tax money for many unnecessary expenditures, like streetscapes, trolleys, ice rinks, and aquatic centers.  Proponents say that this higher tax will relieve property taxes, a ruse never proved true.       Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom would like to fight this tax hike, but only if  Bellevue residents volunteer to help us plan and implement a campaign.  We promise to work with you closely to accomplish this effort.  Please email us at netaxpayers@gmail.com.

Axe the Tax

As part of its City Watch Project, Nebraska Taxpayers for Freedom is launching a statewide project to mobilize taxpayers against the possible attempt by up to 86 municipalities to raise their local sales taxes by 1/2c per dollar. State senators overrode a veto by Gov. Dave Heineman to allow, under LB 357, Nebraska cities to raise their local sales tax rates. In the first phase of this project, NTF is urging taxpayers to vigorously lobby their city council members to vote NO on an enabling ordinance. 70% of a city council must approve such measure, 5 votes in a city council of 7. In municipalities in which city councils do pass enabling ordinances, NTF will work with taxpayers to defeat the ordinance when voted upon at the polls. Please join your fellow taxpayers on Wed. May 9, 6:15 PM at Millard Library, 132nd & Westwood Ln, Omaha, to begin the campaign to "Axe the Tax." Special pep talk by Omaha City Council Member Jean Stothert, followed by a short Power Point presentation, then petitions and issue papers to take home, so that you can lobby your city council members.
